Planning Your Education

Your school provides this course curriculum guide as a means of assisting students and parents in understanding and planning their course of study. Students are encouraged to carefully select related arts courses during the registration process. Your school's guidance counselors and teachers stand ready to assist them. Parents are invited and encouraged to actively participate by assisting their student.

Related arts classes are scheduled based upon student requests. However, due to schedule conflicts and changes in course offerings, the staff cannot guarantee that students will be scheduled for all courses they request. In addition, be aware that the school builds a master schedule and employs teachers based on students' requests; therefore, schedule changes will only be considered on a very limited basis.

Online Registration

Online Registration was implemented in 2004. It allows parents and students to request related arts courses for the next school year from home via the Internet. Families who do not have access to the Internet will be given opportunities to use school computers to register online. Parents and students should understand that requesting a related arts course through online registration does not guarantee that the student is placed in the course the next school year. Final placement in a course is dependent upon enrollment, scheduling feasibility, and teacher allocation. Parents without Internet access at home will receive a printed copy of the course curriculum guide by request. The window for students to select related arts courses online is posted by the school on the school's website and in parent newsletters. Schools will provide instructions on accessing the online registration tool.

Promotion Criteria for Grades Six, Seven, and Eight

Criterion 1: Students in grades six through eight are expected to learn, at a minimum, curriculum standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and meet attendance requirements.
Criterion 2: The student earned a minimum average grade of 60% in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies (if language arts is taught as a separate subject in grades 6-8, the English language arts grade will be determined by the mean of the yearly average of reading and language arts.)
End of Year Promotion Status
The following are summary designation and descriptors for end-of-year promotion status of students in grades six-eight.
Promoted – The student met all promotion criteria. The one exception is that students who fail a high school credit bearing course in middle school are promoted but must retake the course. Enrollment in these credit bearing courses will be determined by the district criteria.
Promoted - Summer School Required - The student failed to meet the criteria for one or two core academic areas, but successful performance in summer school for any deficient area was met.

IGPs, Career Clusters and Personal Pathways to Success

The South Carolina Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) requires school districts to develop a curriculum organized around the career cluster system–16 career clusters, schools of study, and majors. In the organization of the district curriculum around the career cluster system, Greenville County Schools divided the 16 career clusters into six schools of study. These six schools of study include School of Arts, Communication and Information Technology; Business, Marketing and Management; Environmental and Agricultural Systems; Health Science; Human Resources and Services; and Industrial Manufacturing and Engineering Systems. Under each school of study a student will find related career clusters. The career clusters are then broken down into academic focus areas (majors) that students may choose based on interests and skills.

Personal Pathways to Success is the name given to this reorganization of the curriculum which is designed to help students take control of planning for their futures. Personal Pathways to Success provides the solid mix of academic and technical skills students need to compete in the global economy. It gives students a reason to achieve in school by connecting success in school with success in life. It maintains South Carolina's core academic requirements while opening up pathways to success for students no matter where they lead – to two-year colleges, four-year colleges or universities, the military, or directly into the workforce. Students, parents, and counselors work together to develop Individual Graduation Plans (IGP) that specify a student's cluster, academic focus (major), post-secondary goals, planned high school activities, and planned out-of-class activities. The Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) is a document that states the student's intentions related to courses that are taken during high school. The IGP is initiated in the 8th grade with the choice of a cluster area. When the IGP is updated in the 10th grade, the student will select an academic focus (major) within their cluster of choice. Students will utilize Naviance, a comprehensive college and career readiness tool, to help them align their strengths and interests to their career goals. The courses that are taken are determined by the student's interests. It can be modified over time as interests and skills develop or change. The IGP is like a road map to the future: if the student stays on course, the student will reach the destination – graduation – with all the courses, skills and experience needed to take his education or career to the next level. Each year the student, parents/guardians, and counselors will review and update the plans for the coming year. Switching clusters or majors is okay -- as the high school years progress and the student learns more about his interests and skills there are bound to be changes in choice of coursework.

Registration Process

  

 

Student registration for students currently in grades 5-8 will take place February 22nd - March 12th.  Parents and students are advised to seek information from their schools as to when specific grade levels will register and other important information related to a successful registration.  Prior to registration, schools will post the course catalog on the school website so that parents may see what courses will be offered by their school for the next year.  Parents without internet access at home may request a printed copy of the course catalog. 

The student registration process will ensure that parents have the opportunity to assist their child in requesting elective courses and will allow school counselors and teachers more time for meetings with parents and students to discuss course content and placement issues.  Parents and students should understand that requesting a course does not guarantee that the student is placed in the course the next school year.  Final
placement in a course is dependent upon enrollment, scheduling feasibility, and teacher allocation.

Student Registration Process 2021-2022  

The faculty and staff welcome you and encourage you to use this curriculum guide to plan for the 2021-2022 school year at Mauldin Middle School.  Registering for classes is your opportunity to make the right decision, so please consider carefully which courses you will select.  We want you to have a positive middle school experience, and we look forward to working with you.  When possible, classes are based upon student request. However, due to schedule conflicts and changes in course offerings, the staff cannot guarantee that students will be scheduled for all courses they request.

Academic Course Placement

Qualifications for English 1H : students identified as GTA and have a MAP RIT score of 232 or above automatically qualify. Students who are not identified as GTA must meet the following five criteria: SCReady scores of 705; MAP RIT score of 232 or above in Reading;  and a grade of 90 or higher in their current English class ; High level of performance in reading and writing skills; Ability to think critically and demonstrated enthusiasm for language arts; Teacher recommendation. 

Prerequisite for Algebra 1H:  Math 7/8  and previous years' math grade for each quarter no lower than an 85 (B) for rising 8th graders.

All seventh and eighth grade students will take the basic academic classes of english, Math, Science, and Social Studies the entire year.  Course recommendations for English and Math are based on criteria determined by the School District of Greenville County.  If you have a concern about your child's placement, it is the parents' responsibility to contact the teacher who made the recommendation and set up a conference.  All teacher recommendations are tentative and will be made based on the assumption that the student meets the defined criteria and is promoted to the next grade.  Adjustments will be made at the end of the school year if summer school or retention is recommended.

Special Education Courses

Students are placed into special education courses based on their Individualized Education Plans (IEP). 
Educational Support - must have an IEP and teacher recommendation required (YR)
Literacy Lab - must have an IEP and teacher recommendation required (YR)
Intensive Literacy Lab - must have an IEP and teacher recommendation required (YR)

Assistance Courses
ESOL courses are designed for the student who has a primary language other than English, and is not proficient in listening, speaking, reading, writing or comprehending in the English speaking classroom.  Placement is based on district criteria. 



Seventh Grade Related Arts Requests:

Band, Singers (Boy), Treble Singers (Girls) and Strings are year long classes and meet every day.  Students must be recommended by the teacher to take Band, Singers (Boys), Treble Singers (Girls) or Strings.

These students will also be scheduled in one semester of physical education/health and one related arts semester course of their choice.

Eighth Grade Related Arts Requests:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do students qualify for the Beta Club?

Sixth Grade - Students who have maintained all A's with no more than one B in all of their 5th grade courses, have no more than one ISS and no OSS during their 5th grade year will be invited to join the Beta Club.

Seventh Grade - Students who have maintained all A's with no more than one B in all of their 5th and 6th grade  courses, have no more than one ISS and no OSS during their 6th grade year will be invited to join the Beta Club. 

Eighth Grade- Students who have maintained all A's with no more than one B in all their 6th and 7th grade  courses, have no more than one ISS and no OSS during their 7th grade year will be invited to join the Beta Club. 

How does my child get placed in related arts classes?
 
Each student fills out a scheduling card to select his/her desired courses. These selections are keyed into the computer and the computer tries accommodate every request.  Once a course is full, it will not honor any more requests for that course. This is not a first-come, first-
serve placement. The computer randomly places the related arts into your child's schedule. If your child would like to drop a   class and add a different one, he/she will have the first 10 ten school days to make the request.  Forms will be available in  the main office. The grade level counselor will notify your child if the change can be made or if it is not possible.

What courses are available for high school credit?

English I Honors, Spanish I CP, Spanish II CP, Geometry Honors, Algebra I Honors, Fundamentals of Computing, Discovery Computer Science, Sports/Entertainment and Marketing, Cyber Citizenship, Band I, Orchestra I, Chorus I and Personal Finance are high school credit courses offered to Eighth grade students who  have maintained an A - B average.  Seventh grade students who  qualify are offered Spanish I CP, Fundamentals of Computing, Computer Science, Discovering Computers, Sports/Entertainment and Marketing and Cyber Citizenship.

Does the school have a fax number?

Yes, we do have a fax number, but before you send a fax we ask that the person receiving it be notified. The school number is 355-6770. The school fax number is 355-6770.

How do I schedule a conference with my child's teachers? You can call, send a note or email your child's homeroom teacher to request a conference. Please make sure to include a phone number where you can be reached during and after school hours.  Teachers will make every effort possible to return your call within twenty-four hours and schedule a conference.

 What is an agenda and why do I need one? An agenda is a notebook containing important information for all Mauldin students and parents. It lists  rules and policies that must be adhered to. It also contains a calendar with space provided to write down assignments from each class. This provides a two-way system of communication from school to home and back again. The agenda is also used as the child's hall pass. The PTSA purchases and provides all students one at the beginning of the school year. If lost, your child will need to purchase another one in the main office for $7.00.

Can anyone play sports?

Only seventh and eighth grade students are eligible to play sports.

Does the proficiency test count for my keyboarding?

As of January 2019, students no longer are required to pass a keyboarding test nor do they have to take a keyboarding course to be eligible to graduate high school.   All students still must complete one computer  unit before graduating from high school.  We offer a course for HS credit starting in then seventh grade.

How do I know what events are going on at Mauldin?

The Principal issues a phone blast every Sunday.  This weekly call will keep you up to date with what is happening each week at school.  In addition to the weekly calls, events are posted on our website and the front signage each week.  Teacher also post weekly lesson plans on their websites to help students and parents keep up with daily activities in the classroom. 

 Will I get to use a locker?

Lockers are provided to students in all grade levels. Students can bring their own dial lock but must provide the combination to their homeroom teacher.

What do I need to do in case of an early dismissal, absence, or tardy?

Early Dismissal 
You should bring a note from home to the office. Be sure to include the student's and parent's complete name and number. Your parent  must come in and sign you out. Early dismissals need to be before 2:45 so they do not interfere with school dismissal.



Tardy 
 You should  bring a note to the office explaining your tardiness. Be sure to include student's and parent's complete name and phone number.

Absence 
You should bring in a parent or doctor's note excusing your absence within two days for it to be an excused absence. Be sure to include student's and parent's complete name and phone number. Note: If a student has more than ten (10) unexcused absences, he/she may be retained.

Do I have to purchase a gym uniform?

 Students have to purchase a uniform from the school.  The cost is $20.00 for both the shirt and the shorts.  The physical education instructor will collect the money for the uniforms when you come to PE.

The emphasis in this standards-based seventh-grade course is on algebraic thinking and on extending the understanding of the real number system to include integers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers. Eighth grade social studies focuses on the story of the history of South Carolina and the role that the state and its people have played in the development of the United States as a nation. Students learn about the state'sdevelopment during colonial times and the growth of the American ideal which led to the break with England, the rising controversy about slavery, and the Civil War. The study of the rebuilding of South Carolina after the Civil War and the continuing struggle for civil rights and justice waged by the people of South Carolina allows students to see the progress that the state has made and to appreciate the contributions that its people have made to the nation as a whole. Students also learn about the major political, economic, and social changes in South Carolina through the twentieth century and to the present in the context of national and worldwide events.
