Your school provides this course curriculum guide as a means of assisting students and parents in understanding and planning their course of study. Students are encouraged to carefully select related arts courses during the registration process. Your school's guidance counselors and teachers stand ready to assist them. Parents are invited and encouraged to actively participate by assisting their student.
Related arts classes are scheduled based upon student requests. However, due to schedule conflicts and changes in course offerings, the staff cannot guarantee that students will be scheduled for all courses they request. In addition, be aware that the school builds a master schedule and employs teachers based on students' requests; therefore, schedule changes will only be considered on a very limited basis.
Online Registration was implemented in 2004. It allows parents and students to request related arts courses for the next school year from home via the Internet. Families who do not have access to the Internet will be given opportunities to use school computers to register online. Parents and students should understand that requesting a related arts course through online registration does not guarantee that the student is placed in the course the next school year. Final placement in a course is dependent upon enrollment, scheduling feasibility, and teacher allocation. Parents without Internet access at home will receive a printed copy of the course curriculum guide by request. The window for students to select related arts courses online is posted by the school on the school's website and in parent newsletters. Schools will provide instructions on accessing the online registration tool.

Middle school is a crucial time in each student’s education as they make the transition from elementary school to high school. At the middle level we pride ourselves on the support that we give students while preparing them for the independence and opportunities that they will experience in high school. Our mission at Mauldin Middle School is to prepare all students to succeed in becoming lifelong learners and responsible, productive citizens.
Mauldin Middle School believes in the middle school model as this is what is best for the support and growth of the middle level child. Each grade level is broken down into teams, which makes a large student population seem smaller and more manageable. Smaller teams provide the opportunity to more closely monitor the academic success of each student, disciplinary concerns, and social emotional well-being of each child.
All rising 6th graders are required to take math, english, science, social studies andephysical education. Placement in english and math courses is determined by district criteria and completed by 5th grade teachers. In addition to these core classes, students get to request up to three related arts classes that is based on a combination of semester and year-long classes. These classes will be visible to students during the registration process. Parents have the opportunity to review all academic courses and requested related arts classes.

Mauldin Middle School has a 7-period day made up of 4 core academic periods, 2 elective periods and a rotating period for additional support in core classes. Your child’s 5th grade teacher will make recommendations for your child in the areas of English and Math. Science and Social Studies are mass assigned and heterogeneously mixed. 2024-2025 Elective Course Information
Mauldin Middle School offers a variety of yearlong and semester elective options. Student enrolling with Mauldin Middle for the 2022-2023 school year will take 3-4 elective classes next year. Directions for selecting electives are as follows.
Elective 1: Physical Education – this course is required and has been assigned to all students in the registration system.
Elective 2-4: Students will have the option to choose 1 yearlong elective and one semester elective or 3 semester electives.

Special Education Courses
Students are placed into special education courses based on their Individualized Education Plans (IEP).
Assistance Courses
ESOL - courses are designed for the student who has a primary language other than English, and is not proficient in listening, speaking, reading, writing, or comprehending in the English-speaking classroom. Placement is based on district criteria.
Reading Assistance – course that offers students remediation and additional assistance in reading skills and support of on grade level instruction. Placement is based on district criteria.
Teams
Student in 6th, 7th and 8th grade are placed in teams. Teams are composed of a Math, English, Science, and Social Studies teacher. The team of teachers meet together to plan, discuss, and collaborate with parents and other community agencies to meet the needs of each student. Placement in teams is a result of computer selection with each team having the same class levels.

How do students qualify for the Beta Club?
Sixth Grade - Students who have maintained an A with no more than one B in all of their 5th grade courses, have no ISS or OSS during their 5th grade year will be invited to join the Beta Club.
Seventh Grade - Students who have maintained an A with no more than one B in all of their 5th and 6th grade courses, have no ISS or OSS during their 6th grade year will be invited to join the Beta Club.
Eighth Grade- Students who have maintained an A with no more than one B in all of their 6th and 7th grade courses, have no ISS or OSS during their 7th grade year will be invitied to join the Beta Club.
How does my child get placed in related arts classes?
Each student fills out a scheduling card to select his/her desired courses. These selections are keyed into the computer and the computer tries to accommodate every request. Once a course is full, it will not honor any more requests for the at course. This is not a first-come, first-serve placement. The computer randomly places the related arts into your child's schedule. If your child would like to drop a class and add a different one, he/she will have the first 10 school days to make the request. Forms will be available in the main office. The grade level counselor will notify your child if the change can be made or if it is not possible.
What courses are available for high school credit?
Seventh grade students who qualify are offered Fundamentals of Computing, Discovering Computer Science, Sports/Entertainment and Marketing and Cyber Citizenship. Students must maintain an A average in 6th grade classes to choose high school courses for 7th grade.
Eighth grade students who qualify are offered English I Honors, Spanish I CP, , Algebra I Honors, Introduction to Engineering, Fundamentals of Computing, Discovering Computer Science, Sports/Entertainment and Marketing, Cyber Citizenship, Band I, Orchestra I, Chorus I and Personal Finance. Students must maintain an A/B average in 7th grade classes to choose high school courses in 8th grade.
How do I schedule a conference with my child's teachers?
You can call, send a note or email your child's teacher to request a conference. Please make sure to include a phone number where you can be reached during and after school hours. Teachers will make every effort possible to return your call within twenty-four hours and schedule a conference.
Can anyone play sports?
Only seventh and eighth grade students who maintain a "C" average or better in all six classes and who were promoted (not placed) to the next grade are eligible to play sports.
How do I know what events are going on at Mauldin?
The Principal issues a phone blast every Sunday. This weekly call will keep you up to date with what is happening each week at school. In addition to the weekly calls, events are posted on our website, the front signage and also sent through Parent Backpack. Teachers also post weekly lesson plans on their websites to help students and parents keep up with daily activities in the classroom.
Will I get to use a locker?
Yes!
What do I need to do in case of an early dismissal, absence, or tardy?
Early Dismissal - You should bring a note from home to the office. Be sure to include the student's and parent's complete name and number. Your parent must come in and sign you out. Early dismissals need to be before 2:45 so they dop not interfere with school dismissal.
Tardy - You should bring a note to the office explaining your tardiness. Be sure to include student's and parent's
complete name and phone number.
Absence - You should bring in a parent or doctor's note excusing your absence within two daysfor it to be an excused absence. Be sure to include student's and parent's complete name and phone number. Note: If a student has more than ten (10) unexcused absences, he/she may be retained.
Do I have to purchase a gym uniform?
Yes. Students have to purchase a uniform from the school. The cost is $20.00 for both the shirt and the shorts. The physical education instructor will collect the money for the uniforms when you come to PE.
